Empowering Inclusion: A Deep Dive into COCEMFE Alicante's Mission to Support Individuals with Disabilities and Bridge the Gap to Employment Opportunities

In our quest to explore organisations dedicated to supporting individuals with special needs, our team recently had the privilege of visiting COCEMFE Alicante. COCEMFE, or the “Confederation of Persons with Physical and Organic Disabilities of Spain,” is a remarkable association on a mission to empower individuals with disabilities. This remarkable organisation, which began its journey in 1980, has been operational since 2017 and, in the past two years, has taken significant strides in bridging the gap between special needs individuals and the job market.

On Day 5, we left for Alicante at 8:10 am with Mr. Joaquín Francisco Roca González as well as Mr. Rafael Hernández Arnaiz and reached Alicante around 9:40 am, following which we had a detailed conversation on what had transpired over the week. Then, we reached the Alicante office of COCEMFE and met with Mr. Oliver, who led us through a rather informative day with the organisation.

Education, Integration, and Empowerment COCEMFE Alicante’s core mission revolves around education and integration. They collaborate closely with secondary education institutions to support teachers and empower students with special needs. Through vocational and conventional qualification courses, individuals can gain recognised certifications with 45 or 60 ECTS credits, opening doors to employment opportunities.

Work integration and job support One of the critical facets of COCEMFE Alicante’s work is facilitating employment. The organisation serves as a bridge connecting individuals with disabilities and potential employers. Spanish regulations mandate that companies with 15 or more employees must employ at least 2% of individuals with disabilities, making COCEMFE Alicante’s efforts pivotal in ensuring inclusivity in the job market.

In the past year, COCEMFE Alicante has maintained a database of 1,200 job seekers with certified disabilities. Out of these, they supported 50 individuals in their job search, with 25 successfully securing employment. The impact of these numbers is immeasurable in terms of the lives transformed.

Comprehensive Support and Inclusive Facilities The organisation’s comprehensive approach extends beyond education and employment. COCEMFE Alicante offers a wide range of services, including healthcare, recreational activities, counselling, and psychological support. This holistic approach enriches the quality of life for their beneficiaries, enabling them to lead independent and fulfilling lives. They also possess an adapted kitchen, designed to eliminate discrimination and promote accessibility for individuals with various needs. This commitment to inclusivity extends to all aspects of the organisation’s operations.

Sensitization and Awareness for Inclusivity COCEMFE Alicante actively works to sensitise teachers and students on the importance of inclusive information and communication technology. They advocate for the use of inclusive language and raise awareness about the bullying of disabled individuals. Their initiatives lay the foundation for a more empathetic and inclusive society.

Collaboration for an Inclusive Future As part of a Federation of Associations, COCEMFE Alicante can connect with other organisations to tap into opportunities from both public and private sources. This collaborative approach amplifies their impact, extending their reach to create a more inclusive society.

Innovative Accessibility Solutions  Recognising the importance of technology in creating inclusivity, COCEMFE Alicante is at the forefront of innovation. They educate families of special needs individuals about inclusive digital technologies, ensuring technology becomes a tool for empowerment. The organisation is also committed to making technology more accessible. They actively adapt toys and technology to make them usable for children with disabilities. This effort not only enriches play but also empowers children with technology that will serve them in the future.

KISS: Keeping It Simple, Stupid! Amid their diverse and intricate initiatives, COCEMFE Alicante adheres to the principle of simplicity. This philosophy ensures that their work remains efficient, cost-effective, and, most importantly, effective. By considering and implementing these learnings, organisations can contribute to creating a more equitable and inclusive society, especially for individuals with special needs.
